The day-time temperatures average in the 70’s, the perfect temperature for hiking. There are many scenic choices for hiking in the Camden area including Coastal Mountain Land Trust trails, the Georges River Land Trust trails (see Spruce Mountain Hike) and Camden Hills State Park. There are 30 miles of hiking in Camden Hills State Park alone, where trails to Bald Rock Mountain, Mount Battie and Maiden’s Cliff provide especially spectacular views. A trip to the top of Mount Battie is a must do when in Camden. It provides a magnificent view of the western Penobscot Bay and the coastal islands. On a clear day, visitors can see as far north as Cadillac Mountain. This view inspired Edna St. Vincent Millay’s poem “Renascence.” A map at the top depicts the view with the names of the islands and a stanza from “Renascence.”
You can picnic at the top of the mountain without a lot of other people being around.
Water temperatures are at their warmest. This makes swimming, kayaking, and stand-up paddle boarding enjoyable on bright sunny days.
September is also an excellent time to go out for a schooner sail.
