Glacier Ice Bar

A visit to Samoset’s Glacier Ice bar is a “must-see” outdoor winter activity in the Maine midcoast. Samoset’s Executive Chef, Tim Pierce, and his team carve over 20,000 pounds of crystal-clear ice into one of the “hottest and coolest lounges” found in Maine for two January weekends a year. For us Pennsylvania natives, a glacier ice bar was a brand new experience.  It’s quite a unique experience to sit and have a drink at a bar completely made of ice. Thank heavens for the lambswool blankets covering the ice bar stools. Believe it or not, it does help keep your bottom from freezing!

There is a special drinks menu to enjoy at the ice bar.  In addition to unique chilled cocktails, there are also warm cocktails that include coffee, hot chocolate, or apple cider.  For the really adventurous, there are shots from the ice luge in a special ice luge glass. Even for those that prefer not to imbibe, it is a unique sight to enjoy.  Adding to the scene are a number of intricate ice sculptures.

After walking along the sculptures, one can enjoy sitting by the fire pit and hearing the ocean or you can go inside to warm up and have something to eat at Enoteca Wine Bar or La Bella Vita restaurant.

Samoset Executive Chef demonstrates the technique

Clearly, in addition to being a talented Chef, Tim Pierce is a master ice carver and artist. Each year, he provides a free ice carving workshop at the Camden Public Library in preparation for Winterfest. Pierce, using his many years of experience, gives step-by-step instructions on how to prepare an ice block. It starts with a simple design template drawn on a piece of paper. The piece of paper is “glued” to the ice block using water. Next, he demonstrates the use of a chain-saw, ice pick and wood to carve the design. He emphasizes safety in use of the tools. The master ice carver provides insights into the impact of temperature and exposure to the sun on the carvings. One can read more about Chef Tim Pierce here.

Glacier Ice Bar 2017

We are anxious to see the theme of the 2017 Glacier Ice Bar scheduled for January 13 – 15 and January 20 – 21 (weather permitting). Ice Bar and Sculptures will be displayed beginning at 5pm on Friday, January 13. To verify conditions, call the Samoset at 207.594.2511.

On Saturday evening, January 21 there is an Independent Community Education (I.C.E.) Dance Party from 8pm until midnight. It is a fund raiser to benefit the Children’s House Montesorri School. Purchase your ticket ($10) in advance or at the door! Present your ticket to admit one and receive a wristband permitting you to flow from the Ice Bar to heat up the Dance Floor. DJ Terry Frank will provide the music for dancing. There is a cash bar and Domino’s Pizza to round out the night.
