There are plenty of both indoor and outdoor activities to keep your family busy. Most of the programs require advance registration, so make sure to check out the websites.

10 Things To Do During This February NE School Vacation Week

1. A trip to Owl’s Head Transportation (OHT) Museum is always great fun!

During school vacation week, there are daily hands on activities to keep your inventors busy. There are 2 sessions Monday through Thursday one from 10:30 to 12 and then another from 1pm to 2:30.  The activities are geared for ages 6 to 14 years old.  It is free to register but there is a suggested donation of $5 per child. Monday, February 19 is a paper airplane workshop. For all of the details, check out the OHT website. You can register for one activity or all 5. Anyone have a child I can borrow on Thursday to make an electric car then test drive it?

2. Avis Turner will conduct a three day art camp at the Farnsworth Museum in Rockland.

Avis is an artist and educator with degrees in childhood development and art education, as well as an MFA in sculpture. The camp is for children from 5 to 7 years old. The children will create a dragon from an old fashion sock puppet. With their new puppets, the children will have a traditional dragon parade inspired by Chinese New Year.

3. The Center for Maine Contemporary (CMCA) will open the Art Lab Monday through Thursday from 2-4pm.

The program, DRAW BIG WRITE LARGE, will use life-size letters, rope murals + string collagraphs, scroll poetry, human-sized landscape ‘crankies’, and collaborative drawing games. It provides a fun way to communicate ideas that matter.

4. There is always something going on at the Camden Public Library.

During February School Vacation week, there is a 3 day Under the Sea Vacation Camp for elementary school children. There will be a different activity for each of the three days.

5. The Rockport Public Library has a number of programs scheduled for children during vacation week.

It is really quite amazing how there are so many libraries in small communities close together that have fantastic programming.  My pick for the week is Paddington Bear Movie Showing and Toast Snack Craft from 1:30 to 3:30 pm on Friday.

6. The Rockland Public Library also has children’s programming all week at various times.

My pick for the week is the drawing workshop from 4 to 5 pm on Tuesday. Artist Catinka Knoth leads the class. Knoth demonstrates how to draw and make motifs President’s Day as participants draw along. Class is free and open to all.

7. Our pick for school vacation week at the Thomaston Library is the Blood and Bones program.

Tuesday and Thursday the program is from 1pm to 2pm and includes fun body science activities and snacks.  On Wednesday the science activities start at 11am followed by a mac and cheese lunch.  At 12:30, they will show the movie Wonder.Human Skeleton Dancing

8. Winter Fun at the Camden Snowbowl.

The Camden Snowbowl has Ski and Ride Programs for all age groups of children starting from age 3 up through age 14.  Each program has multiple time slot offerings.NE School vacation week; ski school

9. Experience the newest craze: Fat biking

Fat biking has become the latest craze for those who love the outdoors all year round. Fat tire biking, or “fat biking” is a bike with larger size tires making it possible to ride any time of year, in nearly any conditions, including sand and snow. This is great because it makes it possible to see more winter wonderland in a much shorter time. Side Country Sports will be at the Camden Snowbowl on Saturday, February 17, 2018 and Monday, February 19, 2018 with demo bikes to try for free. If you want to try fat biking on another day or at Camden Hills State Park instead, you can rent a bike and pick it up at Side Country Sports in Rockland or Maine Sport Outfitters in Rockport.

10. Snowshoe or cross country ski on area trails.

Bring your snowshoes or cross country skis or rent a pair from Maine Sport Outfitters and enjoy the many area trails. The indoor activities listed above are for children, but all of the libraries also have programs for adults.  Teachers and school administrators also need a change of pace during school vacation.  Of course, adults can enjoy all of the outdoor activities as well.
